Seattle Underground Tour Review: Is it worth it?

An underground tour sounds like a very interesting tour to take, doesn’t it? Like, what would an underground tour entail? Well, these are just a couple questions I had when I first discovered this tour while searching for activities to do for my solo trip to Seattle. Needless to say, after I read the tour description, I was sold and knew I had to partake in this activity! With my solo trip done, and having taken the tour, I have developed my own thoughts on the Seattle Underground Tour and whether taking the tour is worth it or not.

What is the Seattle Underground Tour?

First, let’s back up for a bit. What exactly is the Seattle Underground Tour in the first place? According to GetYourGuide, where I found and purchased my ticket for this tour, it said:

Explore Seattle from a different angle and go below Pioneer Square. Take a walk through three underground passageways originally constructed in the 1890’s and learn about Seattle’s forgotten history”.

How cool does that sound?! If you felt immediately curious, happy, yet puzzled at the same time, you’re not alone. I felt the exact same way when I first read that. Basically, the underground tour is where you walk through Pioneer Square, exploring it from above and below, and learning about Seattle’s history and underground passageways. Also, you get to learn about why Seattle has these underground passageways to begin with.

But to be for real, this description had me at undergroundpassageways, and forgotten history. Now that just sounds like a sweet excursion to do if you’re into history and cool things like underground passageways. However, I’m a nerd who is into that stuff. So if you’re like me, then this is the tour for you!

How much is the tour?

The tour cost $29.03 for one person. Not terribly expensive but not the cheapest excursion you can book either.

How long is it?

The whole tour takes about an hour. That includes the start time when the guide starts his history lesson on Seattle, to the minute he calls the tour over in Pioneer Square. So, if you have other things to do that day, this tour isn’t going to take up a whole lot of time. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes and that you’re physically able to walk up and down stairs.

My thoughts on the tour

At the end of the day, what were my honest thoughts on the tour? Personally, I thought the tour was very informative yet comical. Our tour guide was very knowledgable about Seattle and its history, yet he was able to bring his own personality and sense of humor into the tour. I admire that about a tour guide. When they’re able to be knowledgable yet comical or sarcastic, it definitely makes the tour and overall vibe more enjoyable.

I also thought it was pretty cool that we got to actually go underground for certain portions of the tour to see what the original streets in Seattle were like. Though, I wish we could’ve seen more of the underground passageways. However, I do understand that some of those areas are closed off by the city for a variety of reasons. I guess I just like a more creepy vibe, so being underground more would’ve been preferable.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy walking around some portions of Pioneer Square in Seattle! Especially during the fall (when I visited the city), it was beautiful to see the foliage in Seattle. Plus, it was fun to just explore another Seattle neighborhood and learn more about its history and relevance to the original street structure.

Needless to say, I thought the tour was very good and provided amazing information on Seattle’s forgotten history, it’s original construction, and its progression throughout the decades. All the while walking from one area in Pioneer Square to the next, then down to the underground passageways for added information and history.

Do I recommend this tour?

Overall, I recommend this tour to anyone who is visiting Seattle! There are moments where you do need to walk and go up and down stairs. So do be aware going into this or to even consider doing a tour like this. If you’re able to, then take it! Not only is it a fun way to learn about Seattle’s history but you also get to walk around and learn about one of its neighborhoods, PLUS you explore some of the old streets (underground paths) of Seattle.

It’s interesting, fun, and something cool to do while you’re visiting Seattle.
